Credentials, SKills & Qualifications - either/or situation

Summary:

We have a scenario where employees are required to have one of two credentials. We have both listed in the relevant position profile.

i.e. Employee has Credential A, then Credential B is not required, and vice versa. Need to ensure alerts to employees and managers are not sent unnecessarily.

There are other profiles that may use the 2 items separately so combining into a single item isn't an option, plus if employees happen to have both then there should not be an issue recording both, and alerts should work from the later expiry date.
