Changing UOM and deactivating old absence plan/type

Hi all,
We are having a requirement to change UOM of sick leave from Calendar days to Days.
We are thinking of below approach
- Rename old absence type and provide end date/deactivate absence plan and absence type.
- Create new absence plan and type for Sick leave and change UOM to days.
Queries on below
- What are the prerequisites for deactivating/providing end date for absence plan & type. What is the recommended approach? If we provide end date, can we report on historical data?
- For the new absence plan and type, should we keep effective date as 1/1/51 or start of the year(2026)?
