Why are my work orders not showing duration even though Resources have been added?

I create a work order with resource requirements and check the scheduled box and define default scheduling. Upon saving, the start and completion dates are the same. However, when I delete the completion date and save the work order, it suddenly shows duration. Why is the duration not calculating upon saving the work order?
