Total compensation statement - Descriptive text not rendering spl chars and html formatting (RW)

Our TCS is no longer rendering special characters like "@" (on emails) or "+" (phone suffixes) correctly on the descriptive texts under categories. Some of the formatting done via html (bg colors) are stripped off as well. This was working fine in non Redwood, issue appears more recently after turning on Redwood. We have tried a few ways to make it work (providing directly, enclosed under html tags, using <text/> etc., but they seem to be re-converted to their respective codes - eg. &#64; or &#43; once the category is saved. (e.g. example&#64;oracle.com instead of example@oracle.com). It appears fine in preview but switches once the save is performed and displays incorrectly in statement as well.
