Formatting Message templates

Is anyone else having issues when trying to format a message template? I have a couple tables inserted and I have one cell of the table filled with black and text white. I update the html code to reflect I go to look and it looks fine. then i save and when i go preveiw the black does not show and because the text is white that doesn't show either. Is there a work around? Thanks.
