Creating Candidate: Email Already Found

We're in the process of creating a new Candidate profile for someone we meet at a careerfair...

however, when we go to enter the email address, and save:  We're getting an error telling us the email is already found within the system.

That's fine, however, when I'm attempting to find and merge the profiles -- I only find the candidate profile I created.

Has anyone has this issue before?

And any insight would be excellent.
