Average Time Candidates Spend in Step/Status

I'm looking for some insight on the best way to build a report that shows the average length of time candidates spend in various steps and/or statuses within our candidate selection workflow (CSW). Example, I'd like to see how long a candidate spends in New/New Candiate all the way through to Screening/Recruiter Screen. Unfortunately, we don't require many of the statuses within our workflow, so it's always a challenge when trying to pull metrics around counts or length of time, as not all recruiters move candidates through all of the appropriate statuses!  Would appreciate any tips or tricks that you've
