Connecting to BusinessObjects Universes using Query as a Web Service

Has anyone looked into connecting to the BO Universes using an external application?

SAP have a product called Xcelsius which is used for creating dashboards.  I wanted to know if it was possible to connect to the BO WeBi universes or even reports and use the data results as the source for dashboard components.

It's a little side project I'm investigating till OBIEE is the established BI tool.
