Can you limit the number of characters in a text box inside of a form?

I recently uploaded a form that requires employees to enter their Social Security Number. Due to the way that the form is laid out, I had to add separate text boxes for each digit of the SSN (as opposed to one big text box that the entire number can fit inside of). Many employees are not realizing initially that there are 9 separate boxes so they will type multiple characters into one tiny box and when they finish the form it will appear as though they have a 15-20 digit SSN.
