Undocumented feature: Show me more/less items?

This feature is referenced 3 times in the TBE 14B2 User Guide, but I cannot find an explanation of the criteria it uses to determine what gets shown and what doesn't. Concerned that I may miss something, I just leave it set to "Show me more items".

Anyone have any ideas how it determines which records are shown and which aren't?
