Active Candidates Report

We would like to know the number of active candidates we have in certain steps.

Because of some poor reference model build when our Taleo system was implemented, it is tricky to pull reports showing how many candidates we have in non-rejected/not selected steps based on status reference model. We would like to know the number of all active candidates in our New Step (Not in a rejected or not selected status) and number of all active candidates in our Hiring Manager & Interview Steps. Is there another way to do this?
