Merge Forms - How do you add a variable that is a multi select field?

How do you add a variable that is based on a multi select field?

I've created a merge form and I'm struggling to capture all the values on the form where a field is a multi select checkbox.  I thought I needed to create a unique checkbox for each selection value and reference the same variable in the Name field in the properties, but it appears Adobe doesn't like that.  It was appending a "#1", "#2", "#x".... so it wasn't work.  I was setting the Export Value as the actual selection values.

Thank you in advance,
