What are the best practices for rehires in Taleo?

So I have a rehire in Taleo that I want to convert to an employee. Do most of you just re-activate the old employee file and change any relevant fields? Do you delete the old file and just import the new one? I am unaware of anyway to merge the new information into the old file. Suggestions?
