Unable to update Resource Role or Reporting Manager

Users changed Organizations and now the Role and Manager fields are non-enterable

I have two Sales Managers that swapped Regions. I updated the Organizations, adding End Dates for each manager, and then adding them to the other other Organization.  Now, when I go to "Manage Users" to set their new Managers, the Resource Role and Reporting Manager have been set to Null, and they are non-enterable.

I've tried running the LDAP processes and "Refresh Manager Hierarchy", but that makes no difference.  I've also tried updating the Organization Hierarchy, but all that did was moving the two Regions to incorrect Divisions!
