Creating a view only Line HR role

We are in the process of creating a view only role for our Line HR using a custom version of the HR Analyst Role and EL expressions on the page. We have been able to address most of the issues, but we are having trouble using EL expressions on the directory to extend the functionality. Has anyone had luck using page parameters to personalize the directory in order to prevent HR from updating content types on the Edit Skills and Qualification page? Thanks,
