"Removing" extended goal from a goal plan

Hi all, can anyone help with my scenario below... seems simple enough but I can't seem to make it work...

  • Employee extended their 2017 goal into 2018 Goal Plan (our goal plans are for calendar year) - their Target Completion Date = 31 Dec 2018.
  • Employee actually finished their goal in 2017, and put the Actual Completion Date to 31 Dec 2017 and completed their goal.

The goal is still on the 2018 Goal Plan.  I've tried reopening the goal, removing the Target Completion Date entirely so now there is only Actual Completion Date = 31 Dec 2017, but the goal still remains on the 2018 Goal Plan.  Of course deleting the goal is not an option since it will remove it form the 2017 goal plan as well.
