We are looking for a way to record a payment from a customer without first generating an invoice.

We are in the process of implementing Financials and we are looking for a way to record a payment from a customer without first generating an invoice.  From what we have been told by our system implementer, it is not possible to record a miscellaneous receipt from a particular customer.  Does anyone know if there is a way?  Thanks!
