Food for thought - using Roster Fields in a novel way

We have a neat checkin application that allows users to be tracked when they have checked into a learning event - I have done a few talks on it out at OHUG (its true birthplace - another story) as well at a few of the more local user group meetings in the northeast. And we are hitting an interesting impasse - where folks are expressing pretty consistently that there is value added where tracking that a person comes signs in and out of a learning event really is what tells a training team that a person has attended and stayed at the event.
