"Sales - CRM Opportunity Sales Stage Snapshot"

Can anyone tell me what the # of Opportunities Fact in the "Sales - CRM Opportunity Sales Stage Snapshot" actually entails? My assumption would be that it shows the total number of opportunities at a snap shot in time. It does not appear to be working like that however. In my query, it is pulling roughly 430 # of Opportunities for a particular week but I am positive that we had nearly 2000 open opportunities at that point in time. I'm just looking for more clarification on what that metric is pulling. Any ideas?
