Why is cost information so elusive?

Yes, I can see historic cost accounting under "Account Management" -> "Cost Analysis", but that's all in the past.

Why isn't there clear cost information presented before I add something??!  It's really annoying not knowing how much something will cost before I add it, use it for a few days, then check the Cost Analysis page to see how much is already cost me.

I've found some cost estimated page in the past (now I can't find it again, argh!), but it's missing some services (types of compute instances for example), but it's completely not integrated with the normal console.
