What are the risks of reopening closed GL periods for postings journals

We are resolving an issue involving journals having not posted in closed historic GL periods. There has been the suggestion to reopen those historic periods to enable posting these journals. The affected periods are within the current financial year, but up to 9 months old.

As I would not normally look to reopen historic periods like this, I would appreciate views on whether others have taken such steps and what issues were encountered? What risks did you encounter and how did you mitigate these? What processes did you need to rerun to ensure balance were correct in more recent periods?
