Bonus and Merit Pro-Ration (Partial Pay Out) Based on Effective Dates

Hi Everyone,
We have a situation where we have employees who are only eligible for a plan certain times within the annual year based on assignment status etc. We want to do a workforce compensation bonus payout and merit payout based on the months the employee was eligible for the plan rather than a year-end date. How are others doing this to support a pro-rated payout based on when the person is eligible for the plan without manually maintaining eligibility and calculating the pro-ration within an excel spreadsheet?
