How to configure approval process to only go so many levels based on hierachy

I need to configure the approval process to go up a number of levels based on management level

Content

I currently have the requisition approval process to transition based on Management Hierarchy. It is using the Hiring Manager's Manager as the initial approver. If the HM is a Manager, the approval needs to go up 2 levels ( Director >> VP). If the HM is a Director (the requisition is a manager level position), the approval only needs to go up 1 level (VP).

As the approval process is set up currently, it will try to go 2 levels up regardless of the initial level of the position/HM. How would be the best way to set the approval to only go 1 level if the position is a management level position?
