Can a Recruiting variable be used in a Onboarding correspondence?

We'd like to include a UDF value which is collected from Recruiting in a Onboarding correspondence. It looks like Recruiting variable can only be used in Recruiting and Career Section correspondence, NOT in Onboarding correspondence. Is this correct? Does anyone encounter the same situation and has any workaround? Thanks in advance!
