Creation of usage based products

Needing setup information of usage based products/items for subscriptions

I seem to be missing a step in the creation of items that can have usages recorded against them within the Billing Summary of a Subscription. Does anyone have a step by step process of what is needed to build a usage based item as well as any configuration requirements? Much appreciated,
