What is the best way to transition from one component number to another across many items?

Hello, 

For a new component we decided to create a PD part number (non-smart part number structure). This component is currently ordered under a legacy, "smart" part number. Smart meaning system generated number, non-smart meaning our internal naming convention.

Since we created the new part number, now we have two part numbers that represent the same thing. We only want to order one to make the most use of order quantities. We do want to be able to transition to new PD part numbers as eventually we want all components to start there. Is there a way to:
