What should a Contingent Worker have access to in the UI?

I have assigned the seeded Contingent Worker role (ORA_PER_CONTINGENT_WORKER_ABSTRACT) to some Contingent Workers, but they are able to see much less in the UI than I expected. I assumed that they'd be able to access the Directory to view public information on employees and contingent workers and to view their own personal information, but the role doesn't seen to give access to either.
Can anyone tell me if it's expected that the Contingent Worker role does not permit use of Directory? Is there something I need to do e.g. assign additional security role, to allow our contingent workers to use the Directory and to view/update their own personal details?
