Is it possible to display activity detail fields to a user only when they press a button?

Summary:

We'd like to be able to display specific activity detail fields in OFS to our technicians only if they press a plugin button we have visible on their profile.

Content (required):

The plugin button routes the user to an external URL, which provides details only available from the URL, so the idea is a checks-and-balances approach to ensure the technician accesses the additional data. Since a button-press is not tracked/logged, though, I can't find a way to set conditions to allow for this. Is it possible to do set up this conditional visibility?
