Editing a username in security console breaks browse catalog

We have found that editing the username field for existing accounts breaks access to browse catalog. The page simply won't load. What we have had to do is delete the account then create a new one, but we are worried about the effects it will have on transaction history, approval rules, etc so we haven't been using it. Has anyone else run into this? If so how do you resolve it?
