Sign on bonus total

This seems like an easy thing but I can't seem to figure it out. We would like to report out on the total amount of sign on bonuses given out, by quarter over the last two years. When I use the sign on bonus column along with a date column, it tries to list each individual sign on bonus amount instead of just showing the total. I tried TOTAL(sign on bonus column) but it won't take that.

What am I missing? I feel like this should be obvious to me.....
