EMPLOYEE Role for ERP Users

Summary: Is it mandatory to assign EMPLOYEE Role for ERP Users?

Content (required): EMPLOYEE role comes with Self Service Requester role. That count towards Procurement licenses. We are wondering if we can have ERP users without EMPLOYEE role. We can grant them module specific roles. But, by not having EMPLOYEE role, would it have any implications down the line?
