Set up Secure VNC server in OCI Compute instances

Applies to:

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Set up Secure VNC server in RHEL /Oracle Linux / CentOS using SSH tunnel

Solution

In this article, we will see how to setup secure VNC server using SSH tunnel in RHEL/Oracle Linux /CentOS based OCI instances.

Step-by-step instructions:

VNC protocol is un-encrypted. Even though the log in process has some encryption, it is possible to sniff VNC traffic and collect sensitive information. You can fully secure a VNC session by tunneling it via a SSH tunnel. Another advantage of tunneling VNC via SSH is that you do not need to open VNC ports – TCP 590X on your Subnet’s Security List. The existing rule for SSH traffic will do fine.

Howdy, Stranger!
