Automated ID Field in Narrative Report

Is there a way to generate an automatic, auto-incremented ID field in the very first column of a Narrative Reporting report without adding metadata? I am aware of the Rank function and the possibility to use a data field/Smart List, but neither of these options are at the very front of the report. Thanks.
