Some Allocation rules take too much time in EPCM and result in an error/warning message

I have encountered this issue in which allocation rules that have one or few source Cost Centers take a very long time to complete and log this warning message: The formula length may be too long for essbase for Rule ''<RuleName>''.

These rules runtime span from 20 minutes to hours!

I checked source data and driver data for the targets and they exist for both. Some other rules contain so many source Cost Centers and their performance is good. I can't find a pattern here.
