Item Image Thumbnail Options

We're looking to add image thumbnails to our purchasing portal for users. The only option we see is to add URLs specifically. We currently use publicly available URLs, like Office Depot, product links when possible.; however, that's not always possible. We can host the images internally if needed, but didn't know if that was an option or how other organizations were addressing this. Could we host on a server of our own? Would we use UNC paths, have to publish them in some way?
