OCI - How To Switch From GNOME To KDE Or Other Desktop Environment in OL8 When Multiple GUI Desktop

Goal:

How to switch from GNOME to KDE or other Desktop Environment When you have Oracle Linux 8 Instance installed with multiple GUI Desktop Environments.

Solution:

  • Take a backup of the current configuration file.
  • Edit /etc/tigervnc/vncserver-config-defaults and change the parameter "session" from gnome to xfce/KDE/Other Desktop Env, restart the vnc service to relaunch the VNC Server. In this example, the display number is :2.
# vi /etc/tigervnc/vncserver-config-defaults
session=gnome    ---> change this value to xfce or Other Desktop Environment
...
#
# systemctl start vncserver@:2.service
...
#
