Edit button has disappeared on candidate profile

Users with a certain role in our business used to have an 'edit' button in the candidate record in order to be able to update the data. Strangely enough this button now has disappeared whilst no changes have been made (as far as I am aware) in the setup. Even more strange is the fact that they have an edit button for certain candidates and not for other candidates.

Does anybody have an idea on what might have caused this and/or how to solve this?
