How to prevent multiple tabs opening when invoice image is opened

Summary:

We are implementing IDR and when users with view only access click to open the invoice image multiple tabs are opened in the browser. Is there a way to have it open on the invoice screen (like in edit mode) for those users with view only access? If not is there a way to prevent the additional tab that comes up with the message: "This document type is configured for immediate download. Watch for the download to occur via the browser." Or have that tab automatically close after the actual image opens?
