Visual Builder - Field Template column span

Hi, has anyone been able to set column span on a field template? It's straightforward to do on an actual form or field, but I can't do it on a field template. It always defaults to a single column. Ideally I'd like to set a field template to take up the whole width of the layout, which in my case is 3 columns.

EDIT: I've found that if you set the column span of a field before adding the template, the column span will still carry through once you've added the template.
