Postfix Mail Server "/var/spool/postfix/maildrop" Mail Queue Fills /var on Linux Instance

A Linux instance is running the Postfix mail server. The /var/ filesystem on the server has filled to 100% utilization, and further checking subdirectories in /var shows that there are a thousands of files in the /var/spool/postfix/maildrop directory.

# du -sh /var/spool/postfix/maildrop

12G    /var/spool/postfix/maildrop

# ls -lrt|tail
