Renewal Control on Subscription level

How to default value to the "renewal Control/Next Renewal Settings" fields in a new Subscription?

We setup a 'Renewal Rule Template' and assigned it to a BU via the 'Manage Subscription Rules'.

I would expect that the values from the template will be updated to a newly created subscription for that assigned BU under the 'Renewal Control' section.

But it does not.

What is the use of the Template and the assignment to the BU then? How does the automatic renewal process work? When we run the ESS job for automated renewals- what attributes does it check? the attributes in the 'Subscription Renew Control' fields on the Subscription header level or does it check if this subscription is associated to a 'renewal template' via the BU<>'Renew Template Rules' assignment and takes all attributes from there?
