Guidelines for Improving Performance in Hierarchy Navigator

Summary:

After having done a search on the Hierarchy Navigator, the hierarchy appears expanded with the "hits" pinned. When scrolling through the list to look for the pins, performance is slow. Are there any rules of thumb for maintaining reasonable performance in the Hierarchy Navigator?
