External XML content for personalization

We are working with parsing XML from external site to feed emails with real-time news articles. Working with XML is very new to us and so far we only managed to list these articles in the email from top down, following the xml node tree..

I’m wondering whether it’s possible to make use of XML content for 1:1 personalization, like for example being able to assign specific articles from XML feed for individuals by article IDs, Category IDs etc.?
