Allow Matrix Manager access to performance documents

Summary:

We currently have the matrix managers set up and the matrix manager can view person information. However we would like to allow the matrix manager to view performance documents. We currently have a custom Manager Self Service role. Is there a way to add this ability to the custom role? If so, what are the steps?
