Oracle Linux-How to Extend the /boot Filesystem

edited Sep 1, 2023 11:42AM in Linux 6 comments

APPLIES TO:

Linux OS–Version Oracle Linux 7.0 to Oracle Linux 9.0 [Release OL7 to OL9]

Linux x86_64 on Oracle Public Cloud

GOAL:

This document explains whether it is possible to extend/increase the /boot Filesystem on Oracle Linux instances

SOLUTION:

Even though it is technically possible to resize the /boot partition, Oracle does not support nor recommends resizing the /boot partition.

A partition must occupy a single block of sequential disk space and in OCI instances - like in Linux systems in general - the /boot partition is located right before the root filesystem partition, so the /boot filesystem partition cannot be increased because the root filesystem partition is located right after it on the boot volume.

Howdy, Stranger!
