Start date for Generate HCM Rates

I'm looking for a bit of advice about the Generate HCM Rates process. I am aware that the process calculates and stores rates, but what I'm not clear on is the role of the 'process start date' when running the process. Our payroll team are currently using 1st Jan 2023 as a standard start date, but HCM Rates is taking a long time to run and I suspect that's because it's now calculating rates for every day in a 9 month period. I was under the impression that it's acceptable to enter the start and end date of the current
