Different item number in Sales order

Hi

We have a requirement where an item " Item X" is created in PIM. However the Order Management user will not type the number which is created in PIM. He knows the item only as Item Y. Both items are same but internal departments have different item numbers. Is there a way to achieve this. I guess this is not cross reference. Is there any work around ?
