Issues with Supporting reference

I created a supporting reference with balances instead of a supporting reference with no balances. I would like to know what is the best way of correcting it. Can I create a new Supporting reference without balances, unassign the source to the supporting reference with balances and assign it to the new supporting reference without balances? Thank you
