How do you recover data from a boot volume?

I had an Ubuntu instance and ran a release upgrade yesterday, which corrupted the install - it isn't usable anymore. I need to get the data off of that boot volume. I'm on Always Free and that volume takes up 200GB. Can anybody help me?
