    Symptoms

    Following error occurs many times in /var/log/messages and little to no other login takes place until the system is eventually restarted. 

    Rsyslogd error: fopen() failed for path: '/var/lib/rsyslog/imjournal.state.tmp': No space left on device


    Cause

    The cause is evident from the error messages – the filesystem where /var/lib/rsyslog/ is hosted does not have free space available.

    In this case it was /var that was full:

    /dev/mapper/VGExaDb-LVDbVar1     5232640 5232568    72 100% /var

     

    Solution

    Free up used disk space in the filesystem where
